Proposed Analysis: | The delay in diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease poses financial and legal problems for Alzheimer’s disease patients. There are no existing laboratory tests for Alzheimer's and current practice involves diagnosis symptomatically. The brain undergoes various structural changes in Alzheimer's due to the loss of connectivity resulting from neuronal degeneration. The development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows us to acquire brain imaging data that can be useful for studying brain's function and structure in health and disease. MRI data acquired from multiple subjects can be represented in the form of graphs, which allows us to extract information and quantify it using various techniques from computer science and mathematics. Complexity is one of the measures used for studying chemical structures and computer networks. Hence, the aim of this project is to compare brain network complexity in healthy and Alzheimer's disease subject (other degrees of cognitive impairment can also be included in the comparison). This will allow for the development of computational techniques that can be utilized for analyzing Alzheimer's disease through a non-invasive approach and enhance our understanding of the changes in the human brain during impairment using MRI data. |
